Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), which regulates the broadcast sector, had recommended that politicians and religious outfits stay out of the TV business. The Union information & broadcast ministry should have framed guidelines based on the recommendations, but hasn't, perhaps because the ruling party fears treading on the toes of political allies who own TV channels.

As Election 2009 fever soars, there are as many as 39 channels run directly by political parties or through family members or friends.
